Activity in Mitrovica

Objective: Mobilization of Community

Theme: To be and to live with Down Syndrome is OK, Or?! .

Increase the level of mobilization of parents and family member of individual with Down syndrome in Municipality of Mitrovica by offering the opportunities to meet each other, sharing experience and by discussing with representatives of local authorities about needs and solutions regarding services offered from municipality.


The activity has take place in Restaurant “Charlie” security zone in Mitrovica. As it was planed on 11:00 am it begin the meeting by presence of 39 parents of individual with Down syndrome, members of Parents Support Group from Prishtina, two representatives of municipality; The director of Planarization and urbanization of municipality Mr. Mehdi Bala and Vice of Director of Education Mr. Isa Sejdihu. Present were also Director of “Mother Tereza” special school (now named Resource Center), Mr Hajrulla Shyti, Director of “Perparimi” special school in Prishtina, Mrs Igballe Potera, and representatives of NGOs in Mitrovica such as : Caritas Kosova, Handikos, and representative of UNDP/UNKT Mr Albert Konushevci.


By agenda , Director of Down Syndrome Kosova has welcome all parents of children/individuals with Down syndrome in Mitrovica, the representatives of municipality, local NGO’s and journalists of local media and the supporting partner of the activity UNKT/UNDP in Mitrovica.


After a brief of Organization and its activities since march 2007, and the goal of activity presented by Mr Bajraktari was focused on theme: To be with DS or to live is OK, or?!..,

There were four members of Parents Support Group (PSG), which they speak on theme matter first and they gave their thoughts on positive way, as they answer to theme “ We are more in easy position as we were until now, cause of our believe to our children and their abilities that we have to increase.” By addressing the talking to representatives of municipality, one of the sister of person with DS described to participation that” There are many barriers that I face for my brother regarding social integration also the lack of services of municipality that offer actually, she mention also nor secondary school for students with DS ,missing places for adults with DS for risocialization and professional training, and because of that my brother have no place to go and to be educated so most of the time he is staying in home without any activity


An mother from Prishtina, asked the representatives of municipality “have you or any members of municipality planed any programme for individuals with Down syndrome, how should they be after finishing their special school ( 9 years as it is now) and where will stay my child when I die?!.


After speeches of PSG members, to panel was address the Director of Department of Planning and Urbanization of municipality of Mitrovica Mr. Bala, who frankly sad that “I didn’t know until today what is Down syndrome person and the number in Mitrovica region and he add that he personally will engage in respecting the community right and during this mandate the municipality must create option for resource center where your children can increase abilities.


Mr Sejdiu from Department of Education of municipality has congratulate the “citizen brave”, this community movement is the right way of addressing their needs and solutions, and as he add the municipality needs this movement/mobilization to be aware from each parts of society that are not served well and local authorities can forgot them.


In panel the directors of “Mother Teresa School and Perparimi” gave their contribution by discussing for the school resources and needs that schools actually don’t have and they mention their readiness of cooperation with parents and NGO DSK itself.


Most of parents have met each other for first time and they were very satisfied for making friends and they were glade for this opportunity to exchange the experiences and worries with other parents and local authorities.


Children’s and adults with Down syndrome, were in spotlight of activity, by offering satisfaction to participators showing their talents by talking to audience, singing songs and dancing.


As it was planned, despite of Sunday, the activity was covered from local media (Koha ditore news paper, Zeri news paper, radio Blue Sky and from the information office of municipality of Mitrovica).
