Inclusion of youngsters with Down syndrome into the community is a meaningful contribution for everybody. This was the main inaugural statement of the new programme X 21 of NGO DSK on 12 November 2008.
The programme, X 21, consisted of three components, as follows: Training for the coffee preparer and waiter, decorative workshop and premises where the parents, professionals, students and interested media can meet and communicate.
The programme was designed to offer possibilities for social integration of youngsters/adults with Down syndrome and their family members. The aim is to change the attitudes of the public too. Presently the wrong stereotypes and an old fashioned mentality are commonly expressed concerning Down syndrome. The establishment of a place/premise where interested guests would be served and discuss with the Down syndrome persons themselves will work to eliminate these old notions about Down syndrome in general.
The other important element in the programme is the preparedness for an independent job and increase awareness for a self advocacy of adults with Down syndrome.
The X 21 programme was positively welcomed by local authorities despite of the lack of any law in Kosovo about the employment of the persons with disabilities.
